The difference between HPMC and MHEC(HEMC)

At first, allow me to introduce the similar performance between HPMC and MHEC(HEMC).

As an important additive, they both play in crucial role in construction industry application as water retention, thickener. They are widely applied to cement-based or gypsum-based dry mix mortar to enhance the bond strength, water retention and prolong the time of workability.

So, what is the difference between HPMC and MHEC(HEMC)?

Let's talk about the genetic structure of HEMC first, because it has a hydrophilic factor in its structure, so it has relatively good hydrophilicity, that is to say, no matter it is used to produce tile adhesive or putty products, HEMC products are in construction Both have a better function of prolonging the opening time, and also have a better water retention rate, compared with HPMC products. Of course, this is based on the addition of the same product, and the same viscosity of the product.

 

The gel temperature of HPMC is around 60°C-70°C, depending on its group content and different production processes. If the local construction temperature is below 45°C, it is generally no problem to choose HPMC products. If the construction conditions are very special, there are strict requirements on the opening time, and it is recommended to use HPMC products. Usually, the cost of MHEC products is slightly higher than that of HPMC products. Due to the characteristics of the MHEC group, it has a higher gel temperature, usually above 75 °C. Therefore, the stability under high temperature conditions is better than that of HPMC.

In actual construction, in the hot construction environment in summer, the water holding capacity of MHEC with the same viscosity and dosage is better than that of HPMC. Temperature changes can seriously affect the water retention of cellulose. Generally, the higher the temperature, the worse the water retention. If the mortar temperature exceeds 40°C, the water retention of cellulose will be significantly reduced, seriously affecting the construction of the mortar. Southeast Asia is the most affected country and region.
