What is HPMC?

HPMC is a natural polymer derived from wood pulp or refined cotton, which is then hydrolyzed to break down the cellulose into smaller molecules. These molecules are then reacted with propylene oxide and/or ethylene oxide to create a polymer that can be used as a thickener, binder, or film former in various applications. It is extremely versatile because it can be tailored to meet different needs by changing the molecular weight or degree of substitution of the reactants used during its production.

Uses in Construction Industry

HPMC has been used in the construction industry for years due to its ability to provide excellent adhesion and strength when mixed with cement-based materials. It can be added directly to dry mixes like mortar or concrete at low concentrations (usually 0.15–0.3%). When added to these dry mixes, it improves their workability by providing better cohesion and plasticity while also increasing their durability by providing increased strength and resistance to cracking over time.
